Filipino Teleserye

Okay before I start I want you guys to know that this is not a hate post because I am a 100% Filipino, well not literally but 100% in heart so please don't tell me that I hate my own country, I love Philippines and I love being a Filipino. So are we clear now? Okay, so let's move on to my real topic for this post, shall we?
Quality in a product or service is not what the supplier puts in. It is what the customer gets out and is willing to pay for. A product is not quality because it is hard to make and costs a lot of money, as manufacturers typically believe. This is incompetence. Customers pay only for what is of use to them and gives them value. Nothing else constitutes quality.” --Peter F. Drucker quotes
Teleserye’ is the local name of produced soap operas or the television series in the Philippine. Teleserye is derived from the term ‘tele’ which means television and ‘serye’ means series.

I watched, Maalaala Mo Kaya last Saturday night (Would You Remember, abbreviated as "MMK") it is a Philippine drama anthology series on ABS-CBN. Sometimes I still watch this program because it features real life stories of common people or even famous celebrities and personalities here in the Philippines. But while I was watching, something really pissed me off. In other foreign countries, ad breaks are usually short or sometimes they only broadcast one commercial break but here in the Philippines they broadcast not just one or two but more than three commercials! They cut the show really short and play a bunch of commercials. So I decided to make a post why I stopped watching Filipino Teleseryes

There are a lot of new shows on ABS-CBN and GMA and other Philippine networks but none of them catches my attention anymore. Before when I was younger I used to watch Filipino cartoons and teleseryes a lot but now I rather watch American cartoons or TV shows, well don't get me wrong okay I still watch Filipino movies (I might discuss this topic in another post) because it's somehow different with Filipino shows on Television but my point is; shows before are different today and now that I am kinda grown up, I can easily tell the flaws of some shows.

Other shows are not realistic anymore, gag shows are not funny anymore, undying LOVE STORIES! The last Filipino show that I have seen was  "Maging Sino Ka Man" ( Whoever You May Be ). It is really unforgettable for me because the characters really portray their roles so well and I really love the story, and until now I haven't seen any shows on Philippine Television that can beat "Maging Sino Ka Man"

What I love about Filipino Shows:

Actors
-Some actors really know how to act well, they don't need to look good just for them to act in front of the camera.
-I know, some actors on television personally (I met some of them in my workshops before) and they are really good because those people came from theater.

What I hate about Filipino Shows:

Show:
- TV series are shown everyday (Causes you to be fed up)
- Cheaply produced

Story:
- They prolong the story and make the ending somewhat draggy.
- Cliche story lines
- Same old story, different characters. (Ex: Childhood friends turned into lovers. Rich guy falls for a poor girl or the other way around)

SOME Actors:
- Over acting
- Has the looks but doesn't have the talent
- Acting looks really scripted
- In character but not totally passionate with what they are doing.

People like me who watches foreign shows have a very high expectation that's why we can give criticisms to our own Filipino shows and they should listen to our criticisms for them to make things better in the future.

I know other countries just employ imagination, creativity or inspiration to give different twist and come up with something new but I think what our countrymen in show business should know is that they should care less about the ratings and focus more about the QUALITY

QUALITY > RATINGS

So my question for you,
If ever you are a Filipino, do you still watch Filipino teleserye? YES OR NO? AND WHY? :) I would like to hear your point of view! Comment down below.

Keep on smiling,xx

  2. I totally agree with you sis. Teleseryes are very predictable! As soon as it airs in the television, we already know how the story will end. Not to mention the movies too! same plots, different titles, like the 3 consecutive movies, No Other Women, The Mistress and The Secret Affair. The plot are just the same (I haven't watched any of them). :) Not hater here too. #fact :D

    1. Yes, I already watched No other woman before and the Mistress the. acting was really great but the ending didn't surprise me so it didn't give me any thrills! -.- If John Lloyd,Bea Alonzo, and Anne curtis are not one of my favorite actors here in the Philippines I would give them an F for the story of the movie -.-

I miss the action movies before, I am fed up with love stories, I hope they can bring that back.

But I am still hoping for the best in the future ;) hihi

  3. I completely agree with you on all your points. And im a guy! :P What bothers me is that they even call the first episodes "pilots". I've been watching TFC and GMA tv for a few years now and i have never seen any series cancelled. I think they major networks are missing out. I know a lot of filipinos(from Philippines and US) and they all say the same thing when it comes to teleseryes. Predictable, same plots, etc. I am also fed up with love stories. You would think producing so many in the last few years that we would be perfect at it. But unfortunately not. same poor acting, lavish background setting overpowering the scene and dialogue.

There is so much potential for the Philippines. They just need a to be pointed in a different direction. The main problem is that every show is a DRAMA. Some even try being a full featured movie. Drama is fine. they just need to stop trying to turn them into full feature movies like adding car chases and gun fights.

Despite the weak title, Be Careful With My Heart is probably the only show that has my attention at the moment. Its light on drama, good sense of humor, lessons to be learned. I hope they can treat it more like a sitcom and not a drama.

Philippines has a long way to go in terms of production and creativity.
    Have a good one!

    1. Wow! I totally agree with you Sir! And they keep on doing re-make, or they're making the old movies as television shows which doesn't look good for me because instead of making it better than the old ones they ruin it.

I also like Be careful with my heart! It's like John En Marsha before; comedy + light drama! Oh how I wish they play the old shows or if they're going to do a remake of it they better be sure that its somehow like the old ones ore they should be better than the old ones! haha!

I really appreciate that you read this long post hihi! Thank you and Have a good one too!

  5. Nice thoughts. I totally agree with you. It's just that the entertainment industry ignores our criticisms. Most viewers today are blind.
